Season's Greetings

My chronic pain issues are limiting my ability to do very many cards this year. This is one of ten that will be sent to my immediate family and a few close friends. gouache on watercolor card 5x7

At the End of Hamilton Ave

I tried to paint this tree last year and ended up destroying the effort. I'm so very much happier with this one. 5x7

Little House by Seaview School

Another endangered house here in Linwood. This is a second version, the first sold rather promptly and I wanted to get another before it's gone. I did this from my car, parked illegaly. The police drove by but didn't stop...I think they're finally getting to know me!! 5x7

Farther up Patcong Creek, Late Afternoon

I realized today that I enjoy painting en plein air much more in colder weather, the light just glows. Here's to another year of exploring and learning landscape and architectural painting! I did this same view last year almost to the day: Chuck Law's Art Pages: Patcong Creek"> Happy Thanks Giving to all you State-Side readers!

Three Finished Pieces

I have a bad habit of posting works in progress and then never showing the finished product. Here are three long ones...I've really enjoyed working on Raymar's 8x16 panels.

Further advancement on Riviera Beach

I don't know when I've enjoyed working on a painting so much. I've been spending the last week finishing up several other incomplete paintings. This one still has a few more sessions to go, but I think I'm over the hump.

Big Bay Beach Scene 1979

Here is my original sketch of the beach near 12th view in Willoughby. If you are interested in learning more about Willoughby & the Ocean View area of Norfolk I highly recommend rkpuma's Ocean View Nickel Tour

Willoughby Spit

This 9x12 painting is done from a sketch I did of the Big Bay ( Chesapeake )side of Willoughby Spit back in the late 70s. Willoughby is part of the Hampton Roads/Tidewater area where I grew up in Norfolk, Virginia.

The Old Train Station: Sunday Morning

I like this little old train station on the bike path in Linwood. The bike path is now where the tracks used to be. In actuality the real train station was further up around All Wars Memorial Park. ( where the sycamores from the previous post stand ) This building is part of the water company, but it's pretty none-the-less. I've painted it before and will probably paint it again! Another beautiful fall day! 8x10

Fall Geese

SOLD
I think it takes a certain audacity to try and do paintings of God's Fall Palette. I'm not sure I have the skill level yet to pull it off, but it was just too pretty out today and I was feeling too good not to try. Unfortunately as I rushed out to Birch Grove Park I picked up an improperly primed panel ( it was resisting the oil paint.) frustrating...I may wipe this Gaugainesque effort off. Will try again tomorrow!

Onward to the Sea: From the Vault

I got myself a new printer with a scanner. For many years I kept journals filled with writing and sketches. I've thought about trying to publish some of them..I may start a new blog for just that. Meanhwile here is one from The Outer Banks of North Carolina, 1979.

Belhaven at Sunset

SOLD
My father went to this school way back in the 1940s. I started to depict the entire front of the building, but finally just honed in on the silhouette with the "1908".

Shot Gun Shells

Surely I was thinking of Wayne Thiebaud's Lipsticks on this set up. An odd juxtoposition with my Dad's shotgun shells. I never did like hunting much...I always wanted to keep the animals alive and take them home as pets. I used to play with the empty shells all the time when I was a small kid.

Dad's Garage

I'm watching my parent's house while they take their yearly visit to the North Woods of Maine. My father is a commercial fisherman, hunter/outdoorsman and his garage has been on my mind as a subject for a while now. It's kind of of a scary smelly place...but very interesting.

Skull's Bay Sunrise #8

I'm winding down with this sunrise series...other subjects beckon as fall comes to call. When I started these early last summer the sun was rising directly over the creek...now it's so to the right I can no longer get it into the picture. Doing these early morning paintings out on the wetlands has really tuned me into the natural world. That's the Atlantic City skyline in the distance. Not one of my favorite towns in the world, but it looks nice from far away. Later this week I plan to post all the sunrise paintings together, with some commentary about painting in a series, a hot topic over at Katherine Tyrrell's Blog, Making a Mark.

Update

Sorry I have not been here for the past week. Busy with my last two outdoor art fairs of the season, the day job and finishing up commission work. I went out to paint today, but my efforts were not worthy of keeping. This happens when I'm over tired and out of practice. Will begin anew tomorrow. I'm doing a paint out with the Cape May County Art League this thursday hopefully something good will come...it's supposed to be beautiful weather.

Ribbons...photo

I won the first place award at the Art Show in Cape May this weekend. It was an honor, there were 38 other artists in attendance. I'm gathering quite the collection of ribbons from the last couple of years. Every award show I've entered this year I've placed somehwere near the top. I still suffer from an inferiority complex over my art work, but it's not as bad as it used to be..for sure!
Should be back to painting from Life tomorrow.

Cape May Weekend Art Show

I'll be in beautful Victorian Cape May this weekend for the Art League's Annual Show on the Washington street Mall. It's one of my favorite art fairs...a beautiful spot in a beautiful town...and the weather is usually perfect...looks like it will be again this weekend!
